I often meet up with friends and family at the Sunday Santa Monica Farmers' Market. It's eight blocks from home and we enjoy hitting the beach with Lulu after shopping or dining with the locals. As part of our market routine, I often take Lulu and our friends' daughter, Miyuki to visit the ponies. Everything was the same this fine Sunday morning, except for one very special guest who turned up.
At the pony stall, I spotted everybody's favorite food revolutionary Jamie Oliver with his family and friends. A long time fan of his work, I nudged my friend Linda to tell her who I spied. She got pretty excited too. As parents with a keen interest in cooking, food, health and wellness, we admired the work he's done and wanted to talk to him.
I waited for what I thought was an appropriate time to interrupt (if there ever was any) and went up to the TED prize winner, entrepreneur, chef, author, philanthropist, and all around cool guy, Jamie and interrupted him with a, "Hello, Mr. Oliver." Gah. I called him mister! And I'm older than him.
I babbled on about how much I loved his work and show, Food Revolution. I then told Jamie how I had spent the past several days pinging all my parent friends and bulletin boards to rally people to sign petitions asking the LAUSD board members to grant him access into the schools to see what's cooking in our kids' cafeterias. He was stoked and sincerely thankful to everybody helping to welcome Food Revolution to Los Angeles. He said the school district was being a little difficult (he actually used funnier words I won't publish here) but that he had made way with a few schools already.
It was cool to talk to Jamie. He wanted to share info and was open to having a conversation. He was very approachable and generous with his time (especially since his family was present) and made several oceanside residents very happy today.
If you would like to help please sign the petition, join Jamie's Food Revolution Community Facebook page and become an activist (scroll down to "be an activist"). Let's cross our fingers and hope he'll be local soon!
UPDATE January 26, 2011: Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution is coming to LA!
